I didn’t run at all last week. My hip was aching and I had a cold so I backed right off and felt ok with that. I saw my chiro late in the week which fixed the hip issue and went for a nice walk on Monday and did a strength session in the evening to ease back into exercise.
Yesterday I went for another interval run. It was cold out so I got to test out my new Oiselle Lux Gloves and my new Jogging Tights. I looked a very winter runner in my gear and I was happy to be out there. It was meant to be another 30m run/50m walk x 25 session, with warm up and cool down on either side, but my hamstring never really warms up properly in 30m and I missed the beep on my watch to start walking again so I ended up running the 30m run + 50m walk + the next 30m run. 110m then a walk break of 50m.
It felt awesome!! I had no pain, I felt happy and for the first time since running again I felt confident that my legs could do this and that an injury wasn’t about to suddenly appear. I didn’t try to sprint or run fast, just at a comfortable pace and I repeated those 110m/50m with ease until the cool down. It was nothing short of glorious. I’ve worked so hard to get running back.
Running doesn’t come naturally to me, but I feel that freedom that comes when you feel like you’re flying. This time it really feels like a gift. That all those hours in the gym, all the hours at the physio, all the rehab, is making me a stronger runner and a happier one. Hooray for that! It’s not about times for me right now. Not even about getting distance back, which isn’t important as before.
This time I can read my body. I can tell what’s a niggle and what’s an injury waiting to happen. I know I’m willing to do the hard work. This is a gift, and I’m ok with going at the speed and timeline that my recovery needs. I’m cool with that now. For the good runs, the bad runs and the meh runs too.
Thank you past me for putting in the hard work, and the tears that came with it. There’s still so far to go, but it’s been years since I felt like I was flying, even just for 100m at a time. And I’ll take what I can get.
(We all know I love gear, so I’m going to share it with you some of the time)
